Description

Britannia Terrace comprises a row of 20 houses, largely now commercial premises, built between 1848 and 1855 by JJ Scoles. The terrace is located on Marine Parade, Great Yarmouth. The design features a central section of four bays and two-bay end pavilions, with the end pavilions rising to four storeys and the rest of the terrace to three storeys over a basement. The end pavilions have hipped roofs, while the remainder of the terrace is gabled. Eight full-height canted bays are spaced regularly along the terrace.

The brick construction is partly stuccoed, with a mixture of slate and concrete tile roofing. Each property originally had a two-window façade. The ground floor is rusticated with a round-arched doorway and window for each dwelling. Windows were originally sash windows with 8/8 glazing bars, but are now mostly late 20th-century top-hung casements. A cast-iron balcony with two French doors, sheltered by a stuccoed pediment, runs along the first floor of each property. Stuccoed architraves frame the second-floor windows, and an eaves cornice features modillions. Flat-topped, 20th-century dormers are interspersed along the roofline. Transverse ridge stacks are positioned at intervals.

The interior features former kitchen ranges in the cellars and a scullery to the rear of the ground floor. Original features include four-panelled doors and stick-baluster staircases with turned newels.
