Description

The Parish Church of St. Peter is a 15th-century church located in Crostwick, constructed from flint with brick and stone dressings and topped with a slate roof. The building features a west tower, a north porch, a nave, a vestry, and a chancel. The tower includes a base course, diagonal buttresses, and a stair turret. It has a two-light Perpendicular west window, single-light cusped sound holes with hood moulds, two-light Perpendicular sound holes with tracery, and an embattled pierced parapet adorned with crocketed pinnacles. The early 16th-century porch is made of knapped flint with brick quoins and diagonal buttresses, featuring a moulded brick arch supported by half-columns with octagonal bases and capitals, and a cusped brick niche in the gable.

Inside, the nave has three bays, a north door, and a blocked south door, with two and three-light Perpendicular windows that include tracery. There is a fallen stair turret to the south with remnants of a brick newel stair leading to a former rood loft. The single-bay chancel has a 19th-century Perpendicular style three-light east window and two-light Perpendicular windows on the south side. A 19th-century vestry is located to the north. The tower arch is double chamfered with corbel responds shaped like animal heads, possibly sheep. There are stoups by the north and south doors, and seating is provided in recesses under the windows. The roof features 17th-century opposed butt purlins with straight wind braces, along with 19th-century wall posts, corbels, and applied roll mouldings. The chancel arch has double hollow chamfers, and there is a piscina in the south chancel wall. The chancel roof is single framed with collars and struts, and moulded wall plates. A wall painting of St. Christopher is located over the south door, and there are two benches with poupee bench ends.
