Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church located in Great Witchingham, featuring a west tower, south porch, nave, north and south aisles, a south transept, and a chancel. It dates from the 14th and 15th centuries and is constructed of flint, partly plastered, with stone dressings. The roofs of the nave, chancel, and south porch are covered with pantiles, while the aisles have copper roofs.

The 14th-century west tower includes angle buttresses, a flushwork base course, and two ogee-headed niches flanking the west window. The west doorway is blocked. The 15th-century clerestory has eight bays, with the westernmost bay being blank and featuring flushwork panels. The south side displays diaper brickwork. The south porch, also from the 15th century, has two flushwork friezes adorned with crowned 'M's and carvings of the Annunciation in the spandrels of the doorway arch. Inside, there are 14th-century arcades with four bays supported by octagonal piers and double-chamfered arches.

The nave boasts a well-crafted arch-braced roof with wall posts resting on stone corbels, and a traceried cornice, with the eastern bay of the roof panelled to create a canopy of honour over the rood. The aisles have plain arch-braced roofs. Notable interior features include a fine seven-sacrament font that retains much of its original colouring, four benches with pierced and traceried backs and poppy-heads, and the royal arms of Charles II, given by Oliver le Neve in 1660.
