Description

The Cardinals Hat is a house that features a 16th-century jettied timber frame section, which was extended in the early 17th century with diapered brickwork. There is also a late 17th-century double pile extension at the rear, and the building stands two storeys high. The brickwork was rendered and colourwashed around 1975.

On the left side, the wing is built on a rendered flint plinth and has close-studded timber framing, with windows installed in original openings at both the ground and first floor levels, dating from around 1975. The eaves feature short straight arch braces, and the first-floor jetty end post on the left is in two sections. The right section includes a 20th-century panelled door and casement windows. The rear wings are adorned with wrought iron casement windows and have brick parapet gables with moulded brick kneelers. A 20th-century gable stack is located on the right gable.

Inside, the first floor of the timber-framed section has closely spaced joists that rest on an axial beam with swept stops. There is a central chimney stack with splayed recesses, and the opening arches were remodelled around 1975. The first-floor ceiling ties are supported by 18th-century timber knees. The staircase has been rebuilt and features a 17th-century balustrade with turned balusters, moulded handrails, and newels topped with acorn finials made of oak.
