Description

The Oaks is a farmhouse dating from the 17th century, with additions and alterations made in the 18th and late 19th centuries. It is constructed of red brick, gault brick, and slate, featuring an 'L' shaped plan over two storeys, with a two-storey lean-to at the rear. The late 19th-century street facade has three windows and an off-centre door. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, plain splayed stone lintels, and ground floor shutters. There are wrought iron plant boxes at the first floor level. The entrance door is oak panelled with panelled reveals, topped by a four-centred double revealed stone lintel with a key block. The building has 20th-century dormers and axial stacks at either end.

The rear elevation includes four sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor, and below, there are three full-height casement windows with meeting stiles, glazing bars, and a transom, all featuring gauged brick arches. There is an off-centre six-panel part-glazed door with a timber doorcase, fluted pilasters, and a projecting broken pediment. A service wing to the south has casement windows and timber 'Diocletian' windows with brick arches on both floors. Inside, there are three internal stacks and a south axial stack adjacent to the roof hip. The range facing the street has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. The roof structure includes opposed butt purlins and wind braces. A late 19th-century curved staircase features a moulded handrail and square balusters, and there are good cast iron semi-circular grates. A door spandrel in the kitchen is dated 1670.
