Description
The Bircham Institute, originally a house and now serving as a library and flat, dates back to the 17th century but underwent significant alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and colourwashed render, topped with a roof of black pantiles and slate. The building has a 'U'-shaped plan, featuring two storeys and attics that create an open courtyard to the east.
The facade facing the Market Place is rendered and consists of four windows, with an additional blank bay to the south. A central porch is adorned with angle buttresses, a battlemented parapet, and Gothick windows that have hood moulds. The windows are 19th-century sashes with glazing bars and hood moulds. The building also features paired shaped eaves brackets and three gabled dormers. There is an end stack on the north side and an off-centre axial stack on the south.
At the rear, there are red brick wings with gabled roofs of pantiles and slate. The 19th-century sash windows in these wings also have glazing bars and are topped with gauged brick arches. Notably, the southern wing includes storey-height windows at ground floor level.
