Description
Carlton House, Melton House, and the railings are two terraced houses and a shop built in the 18th century and re-fronted in the mid-19th century. They are constructed of red brick, rendered brickwork, and black pantiles, featuring an 'L'-shaped plan with a rear outshut. The buildings are two storeys tall, with a rear range that has one and a half storeys. The facade has eight bays, with a western entrance door that has a double reveal and a four-centred gauged brick arch, along with blank windows at both the ground and first floor levels. There is a double shop front with central doors and a fanlight. The eastern doors also have a fanlight with glazing bars and a flat gauged brick arch. The buildings have parapet verges with end stacks and a central axial stack. The rear range at the west end features a 19th-century casement window, a gabled dormer, and a north parapet gable. The outshut has brick corbelled eaves and a 20th-century flat-roofed dormer. The wrought iron railings with finials and a central gate to Carlton House are set on a dwarf gault brick wall, which has a date stone marked 1884. This listing is included for its group value.
