Description
The remains of the Church of St. Edmunds, a ruined parish church located in Southwood, date back to the 14th century and later. The structure is built from flint, with stone and brick dressings. It features a rectangular west tower, nave, and chancel. The tower has a single light west window with a square chamfered stone head and brick reveals, along with a niche above that has a cusped head made of shaped brick. There is also a single light sound hole with a stone arch and brick reveals, and belfry openings that are single light with splayed brick reveals and honeycomb brick infill. The tower is topped with a brick parapet.
The nave and chancel are largely obscured by vegetation. The north doorway is made of brick and features hollow chamfer moulding and a hood mould. The south doorway has stone voussoirs, hollow chamfer moulding, and a hood mould, with a blocked niche to the east of it. Remains of a lancet window and two light Decorated windows can be seen in the nave and chancel. The tower arch has brick reveals. This building is notable for the extensive use of brick during the 14th century. It is also designated as an Ancient Monument, with County Number 278.
