Description
Merton Hall is a country house located in Merton, built in 1846 by Edward Blore. The building features a north-west wing constructed of brick with stone dressings and plain tiled roofs, designed in the Jacobean style. It stands 2½ storeys tall, with a door positioned left of center, featuring a semi-circular moulded surround sourced from Woodbastwick Hall. The façade includes cross mullioned sash windows, with three on the right and one on the left, consisting of either two or three lights. The first floor has five similar windows, and the structure is adorned with octagonal corner turrets and a moulded brick eaves cornice with dentils.
There are three stepped gable dormers along the eaves line, each with 2-light sashes, and all windows are fitted with hood moulds. To the left, there is a recessed bay and a 20th-century extension designed in a matching style. Rainwater heads dated 1847 are present, with square downpipes situated between the bays. The gabled roof features elaborate multiple stacks, with the northern stack being external. The north façade rises to three storeys and an attic, showcasing a battlemented two-storey bay with cross mullioned sashes beneath shallow pediments. String courses mark the division of floors, and corner turrets capped by mitres flank a stepped gable that contains both three-light and two-light sashes under pediments. The rear elevation mirrors this design.
Surrounding the property is a brick wall with a toothed eaves cornice and a coped parapet, which extends north to form octagonal gate piers topped with stone eagles. A return wall to the west features punched balustrading that leads to the gatehouse.
