Description
Merton Hall Gatehouse is a gatehouse, now serving as an estate office, built in 1613. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys set on a brick plinth. The semi-circular doorway is glazed in the 20th century and is flanked by paired Tuscan columns on high bases. An entablature at the first floor level interrupts a continuous string course of bowtells under a hood. There are single cross mullioned stone casements with three lights on either side of the doorway, each under pediments. The gatehouse has octagonal corner turrets and three shaped gables that feature close cross gabled roofs, partly containing first floor cross mullioned casements with pediments. A clock is positioned in the central gable head, and there is a central timber cupola. The letters "R.G." are displayed on the first floor. Two rainwater heads are dated 1620. The south and north gables are shaped on square shoulders, with the north gable featuring two first floor windows under pediments. The external stacks have tall star-capped octagonal shafts from the 19th century. The rear elevation mirrors the front. A punched balustraded wall extends west to enclose the original courtyard, leading to a brick wall with coping and an octagonal corner turret at the return.
