Description
North Lopham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1923, located by the roadside of The Street in North Lopham, Norfolk. It stands 3.9 meters high on a grassed verge, which was once a more open space before housing development in the area. The memorial features a carved crochet cap atop an eight-sided tapering shaft, which has an elaborate base section with four protruding triangular sides that bear carved laurel wreaths. This is set on a square plinth with detailed moulding along the cornice, resting on a two-tiered foot.
The plinth is inscribed with incised and blacked lettering that reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NORTH/ LOPHAM WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919/ (NAMES)/ 'THERE'S SOME CORNER OF A FOREIGN FIELD/ THAT IS FOR EVER ENGLAND'// IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF NORTH/ LOPHAM WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ IN THE WORLD WAR/ 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS."
