Description
Grady's Hotel, originally known as Lydney House, is a house that was converted into a hotel around the late 20th century. It dates back to approximately 1760 and is constructed of red brick with a roof made of mixed red and black-glazed pantiles. The building stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range. The east front features a central six-panelled and fielded door, which is set behind a porch supported by unfluted Greek Doric columns. The ground and first floors have 6/6 unhorned sash windows, while the attic floor has 3/3 unhorned sash windows, all of which are set under gauged skewback arches. The eaves are bracketed in brick, and the hipped roof has two stacks. The north and south returns also have three-window ranges, with the center windows being blind and the others featuring 6/6 unhorned sash windows. Attached to the south return is a single-storey 19th-century ballroom that includes three 20th-century French windows and has a hipped slate roof. Inside, the ballroom has a 20th-century egg-and-dart frieze, and there is a boarded 20th-century staircase. The cellar consists of five bays divided by square brick piers, each supporting a groin vault made of shaped clunch blocks, with lamp niches on the side walls, some of which are fitted with smoke flues. A scratched date of 16 July 1765 can be found in the cellar.
