Description

Melsop Farm House is a house dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations. It features a rendered timber-frame structure topped with a corrugated iron roof that covers thatch, and has brick stacks at the left end and right ridge. The building has a brick plinth and a three-unit plan, with the roof of the central unit slightly higher than the others. It is two storeys tall and has a three-window range on the first floor, consisting of two- and three-light casements. The ground floor has similar windows and a gabled porch to the centre right. The gable-end walls are blank, with the left wall covered in corrugated iron. At the rear, there are additional casements, a door, and a lean-to extension with a pantile roof.

Inside, the principal elements of the frame are visible, featuring chamfered bridging beams with ogee and run-out stops. There is a straight main stair and a secondary ladder stair from the late 18th or early 19th century, which has a simple rail leading to the first floor of the left unit and is considered a rare survival. Various plank doors are present throughout, and in the central room, there is a built-in cupboard with fielded-panel doors and H hinges. The roof of the central section consists of principals with collars, two tiers of butt purlins, and heavy joists, with the ridge likely being a later addition. Melsop Farm House is a little-altered timber-frame farmhouse.
