Description

The Church of St Swithin is a parish church that dates from the medieval period and later. It is constructed of flint with ashlar and some brick dressings, topped with plain tile and slate roofs. The church features a west tower, a nave with an aisle, a south transept and porch, and a chancel built in 1761, as indicated by a datestone. The 14th-century west tower is supported by a pair of diagonal buttresses and has a chequered flushwork plinth. It includes a two-light cusped Y-traceried west window and two-light bell-openings with pairs of short super mullions flanking cusped soufflets. The tower is topped with a crenellated parapet and crocketted corner pinnacles.

The north side of the nave has two two-light windows and one three-light window in the late Perpendicular style, all with flat heads. The south aisle features two similar three-light windows and one two-light cusped Y-traceried west window. The south transept contains a restored three-light Decorated window with three-petal soufflets at the gable end, a single lancet window to the west, and two two-light Y-traceried windows to the east. The 18th-century chancel has east and south windows in the Decorated style.

Inside, there is a four-bay 14th-century south arcade with octagonal piers, bell capitals, and arches of two plain chamfered orders. The tower arch features filletted semicircular responds and a plain chamfered arch, while the chancel arch from the 18th century is in the classical style. The church also has a 14th-century octagonal font with elaborate blind tracery patterns in each panel and a rare 12th-century pillar piscina located in the chancel.
