Description
Nos. 2, 2A, 4, 4A, 6, and 6A on White Hart Street in Thetford is a former inn that has been converted into two shops and offices. The building dates back to the 17th century but was almost completely rebuilt in the 19th century, with some parts reconstructed in the late 20th century. It features a timber frame with flint and brick, topped with a pantile roof.
The structure has two storeys and a facade with six first-floor window bays that are arranged irregularly. The first floor is rendered and painted. There is a square carriage entrance at the rear, positioned to the left, and to its left is a bowed 19th-century shop front with a 20th-century glazed doorway. The ground floor to the right of the carriage arch was rebuilt in the 20th century and includes two doors, a shop display window, and a sash window. The first floor has six 6/6 sash windows. The roof is hipped, and the south return features three 6/6 horned sashes on each floor, all under segmental heads. The courtyard elevations were extensively rebuilt in the late 20th century.
At the rear of No. 6, there is a two-storey cross wing that still shows exposed flint, clunch, and brick construction. One first-floor window is blocked but retains three ovolo-moulded mullions. Inside, the cellar under No. 2 has been largely rebuilt. The ground floor of No. 2 shows timber studs and a dragon beam in the southwest room, indicating a former jetty. The first floor has chamfered and tongue-stopped bridging beams, with similar beams found in Nos. 4 and 6.
