Description
The Scarning War Memorial Cross is a Portland stone memorial located in the churchyard of the Church of St Peter and St Paul, which is a Grade I-listed building. The cross is prominently placed by the churchyard path in front of the south porch of the church. It features an approximately 3-meter tall wheel-head cross adorned with interlace carving and decorated hemispherical bosses on the cross-head. The cross is supported by a small tapering pedestal that stands on a three-stepped base, which is square in plan.
The names of those commemorated from the First World War are incised and painted black on the front face of the cross shaft. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal reads, "TO THE GLORY OF ALMIGHTY GOD/ AND IN UNDYING MEMORY OF/ OUR BELOVED LADS FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR." The dates 1914 - 1919 are noted on the step below. Additionally, there is an inscription on the riser of the middle step that states, "ETERNAL REST GRANT UNTO THEM O LORD/ AND MAY LIGHT PERPETUAL SHINE UPON THEM."
A later dedication on the south face of the pedestal reads, "ALSO IN MEMORY OF/ (2 NAMES)," with the dates 1939 – 1945 recorded on the step below.
