Description
The East Harling War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of Cornish granite and is situated on a green at the junction of Cheese Hill, White Hart Street, and Market Street. The memorial features a tall wheel-head cross with a carved sword of sacrifice in relief on the front (west) face. This cross is set on a tapering plinth that has a two-stepped base. The plinth displays inscriptions and the names of those commemorated.
The main inscription on the west face reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF EAST HARLING WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. R.I.P." This side lists 14 names. The north and south faces each carry 11 names.
On the east face, there is an inscription for the Second World War that reads: "1939-1945 R.I.P." followed by 12 names.
The memorial is surrounded by a paved square, which is enclosed by eight small granite obelisk posts connected by metal bars, except for the open boundary to the east.
