Description
The Willows is a house that dates from the late medieval period and the 17th century, with modern refacing and additions. The original timber frame is still visible on the first floor of the east side, while the rest has been replaced with brick. It features a pantile roof and has a 15th or 16th-century bay facing the street, along with a 17th-century addition to the south. The building is two storeys high with a former attic and has three bays of modern tripartite sash windows with glazing bars, set beneath skewback arches with cambered soffits. There is one axial stack and one gable-end stack.
Inside, the house retains 15th or 16th-century bays with a large encased spiral bridging joist below. The original roof consists of closely spaced trusses with collars, a former collar purlin, and crown posts. The 17th-century bay features ovolo moulded bridging joists, a fireplace bressummer, and tie beams. A notable feature is a fine oriel window that projects into the landing on shaped brackets; this window has five lights with ovolo moulded mullions and a transom, flanked by two smaller two-light ovolo-moulded mullion windows. The roof also includes collars, butt purlins, and wind braces.
