Description

Bylaugh Hall Farmhouse and Clock Tower is a former service wing and courtyard with stables related to Bylaugh Hall, built between 1850 and 1852 by Charles Barry, junior, and R. Banks for the trustees of Sir John Lombe. The building features gault brick and some stone with slate roofs. A low wing connects the east side of the hall to the southwest corner of the courtyard. The clock tower rises from the center of the south range. The northwest and east ranges are two storeys high, with garages on the ground floor and living space above. There are arched entrances to the courtyard in the north and west ranges, with the western entrance being particularly elaborate, featuring stone voussoirs and a carved keystone, along with Mannerist decoration and flanking rusticated pilasters. The entire facade has a moulded cornice and a parapet with obelisks, with no windows but articulated by plain brickwork panels. The internal facades of the courtyard have sash windows with glazing bars on the upper floors. The clock tower is square in plan, with opposing semicircular arched doorways on the ground floor and plain recessed panels above, featuring corbel tables and stone-dressed loops on each face. The clock stage has a face set in a carved surround on each side, with flanking pilasters supporting pediments. Above is a broach roof that supports an octagonal lantern with jalousie vents, which in turn supports a tented octagonal spire with a weather vane.
