Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church with a history dating back to the 14th century, featuring a tower and nave from that period. The chancel, transepts, and fittings were added in 1809-10, as noted by an inscription above the tower arch. The church has a round western tower, an aisleless nave, transepts, and a chancel.

The tower includes a west lancet window and two first-floor loops with brick reveals and triangular stone heads. It has an octagonal bell stage adorned with alternating open and blind two-light cusped Y tracery, with blind panels filled with knapped flint, and is topped with a crenellated parapet. The nave is buttressed and features two Perpendicular two-light windows, along with 14th-century north and south doorways that have dying mouldings. The transepts and chancel are fitted with three-light Y-traceried gable-end windows. Gault brick dressings and rendered polygonal angle buttresses rise above the eaves to create octagonal turrets. The roofs have projecting eaves supported by plain twin brackets.

Inside, the church is primarily from the 1809-10 renovation, featuring oak box pews arranged in an octagon beneath the crossing. There is a three-decker pulpit, with one side serving as a vestry, and a pair of cast iron fireplaces at the transept gable-ends. The cast iron communion rail is designed in a Gothic style, and there is a late medieval octagonal font with shield panels. The interior also includes plaster segmental barrel vaults that form a groin vaulted crossing, as well as 18th and 19th-century monuments located in the chancel.
