Description

The Gables is a house that has served various purposes over time, including a workhouse, school, bakery, and shop. The main wing was built in 1781, while the cross wing dates back to the 16th century. The cross wing features galletted flint with brick dressings and has been heightened with brick. The main wing is constructed of brick and both sections have pantile roofs.

The building stands two storeys tall. The cross wing includes two simple 19th-century four-bay shop fronts with pilasters, one of which incorporates a panelled door on the east side. The south shop front is set between original brick keyed window jambs and has similar quoins. There is also a 19th-century three-light chamfered mullion and transom window on the first floor of the south side. The west facade consists of three bays with late 19th-century sash windows that feature stucco rustication. The roof of this section is hipped and likely dates to the 18th or 19th century.

In the main wing, there are three bays of 19th-century three-light chamfered mullion and transom windows set into their original openings, with skewback arches and cambered soffits above the ground floor windows. The front doorway is off-centre and features pilasters that overlap the architrave, along with a dentilated frieze. Inside the cross wing, there are two double ogee moulded bridging joists with straight stops.
