Description
Besthorpe Hall is a country house built between 1560 and 1590, with alterations made in 1881, enlargements in 1891, and further changes in 1965. The building is constructed of brick and features a plain tiled roof. The facade dates from 1881 and consists of two storeys. It has a two-storey gabled porch with faceted buttresses. The ground floor includes a range of arched windows with sashes, while the upper floor has a mix of window styles. The gabled roof is topped with two ridge stacks.
The south gable, which dates back to the 16th century, is built in English bond and features pedimented cross casement windows on each floor, including the attic, with the lower two being 19th-century replacements. The gabled head is adorned with pinnacles at the apex and shoulders. A range to the west, added in 1891, is visible, while the ground floor at the rear (west front) was altered in 1965, although some fragments remain, including a three-light brick cross casement with ovolo mullions, a moulded brick eaves cornice, a stepped external stack with crenellations, and a double flue.
The north gable, dating from the 16th century, features a three-light cross casement window on the ground floor, flanked by two two-light brick mullion windows, with the right-hand window converted into a door. Each window has a pediment above it. A moulded string course separates the storeys, and above it, a 19th-century replaced three-light cross casement window includes two circular lights. There is a string course at the eaves line.
Inside, the interior is largely from the late 19th century, featuring one notable linen fold panelled door in a bedroom. The attic fireplace has a moulded plaster surround with a pedimented design on pilasters.
