Description
Garboldisham War Memorial is a First World War memorial built around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in a roadside gated enclosure at the junction of Church Road and Manor Road. The memorial features a hollow wheel head stone cross pattée, which is pierced with a carving of St George and the Dragon, set on a tapering octagonal shaft that ends in a moulded foot adorned with shields on its four faces. Below this is a plinth with four projecting faces that display applied inscription tablets with apexes. The entire structure rests on a two-stepped square base, enclosed by a brick and flint wall at the back and sides, and metal railings with an access gate at the front. The enclosure is paved with cobbled flint.
The front face of the plinth has incised and painted inscriptions on applied stone tablets, which read: MCMXIV/ MCMXIX// PRAISE GOD/ FOR THESE MEN OF/ GARBOLDISHAM/ FOR THEY/ LOVED LIBERTY/ MORE THAN LIFE/ & WERE FAITHFUL/ UNTO DEATH// The names of the fallen are inscribed on the other three faces of the plinth, with the rear face featuring the Second World War addition that reads: 1939 – 1945/ (NAMES).
