Description

The war memorial in Foulden was erected around 1919 through public donations to honor local parishioners who lost their lives in the First World War from 1914 to 1919. It is made of Oolitic limestone and stands on an octagonal base slab. The memorial features a tapered octagonal shaft topped with a foliated cross, which is set on two square risers. The upper riser is taller and has broached corners, while both risers are adorned with inscriptions in Gothic script, which may have originally been filled with lead. The lower riser shows signs of many repairs, resulting in some loss of the inscription.

The upper riser has an inscription on the east face that reads: "To The Glorious Memory of the Men from Foulden Who laid down their lives for their Country in the Great War 1914-1919 This cross is humbly Dedicated." The west face states: "Erected by their fellow parishioners, relatives and friends." The names of nine parishioners who died in the First World War are inscribed on the north and south faces. The lower riser features a quotation from the Old Testament, 1 Samuel, chapter 25, verses 15-16, which begins on the east face and continues around the other three sides: "But the men were very good unto us and we were not hurt... they were a wall unto us both by night and by day."

This war memorial holds significant historical and cultural value both locally and nationally. It serves as a notable example of a memorial raised by public subscription to commemorate the local men who sacrificed their lives during the First World War. It also has additional group value with the Grade-I listed Church of All Saints.
