Description
The Eagle Inn is a building located on the east side of Market Place, dating from the early 19th century. It stands three storeys tall and features three sash windows on the first floor, which have glazing bars and flat arches. The upper floors are constructed of red brick and topped with a low pitch pantile roof. A hanging sign is positioned near the center of the building. The ground floor has twin bar fronts with sunk panelled pilasters leading to a wooden case, a continuous entablature, and a wide board with a small cornice above. The name of the inn is displayed above the entrance on the right, accompanied by a segmental blank tympanum.
To the east is a wing that likely dates from the 17th century, which is two storeys high with an attic. This section has a steep pantile roof featuring a segmental headed dormer casement. The first floor is also red brick, with one near-flush sash window that has glazing bars, and a gilt sculptured eagle at the right corner. There is a three-light bar window that matches the description of the left portion.
The Eagle Inn is part of a group that includes the Dereham Labour Party HQ, Cosy Corner Cafe, Nos 29 to 31 (consecutive), Nos 32, 32a, 33, 34 (north and south portions), Nos 35, 36, the Congregational Church, and premises occupied by Lloyds Bank.
