Description
The War Memorial in Dereham was unveiled in 1922 and is made of Cornish grey granite with inscribed bronze plaques. The monument stands approximately 4 metres high and features a cenotaph on a two-stepped base. The bronze plaques are inscribed with the words "IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF EAST DEREHAM WHO FELL IN THE TWO WORLD WARS 1914-1918 1939-1945" followed by the names of the fallen from each conflict.
This memorial is believed to have been inspired by Sir Edwin Lutyens's cenotaph in Whitehall. Initially dedicated to the men of Dereham who died in the First World War, it was later also dedicated to those who lost their lives in the Second World War.
War memorials hold significant historical and cultural importance at both local and national levels. This memorial is a notable example of a cenotaph and is prominently located in the centre of Dereham, where it has group value with several nearby listed buildings.
