Description
15a Market Place is a building likely dating from the early 18th century, which was used as an inn by the late 18th century. It was converted into retail premises by the 1880s.
The building is constructed from rendered and whitewashed brick, topped with a pantiled roof. It occupies a corner site with a narrow frontage facing south over the Market Place and features a rear wing that has been extended at some point since 1970. The current map does not indicate the subdivision of number 15a from the western end of 15 Market Place.
The exterior of the building consists of two storeys beneath a pitched roof that is hipped to the west. There is an internal chimney stack on the east side and a dentil eaves cornice. Below the eaves, there is a painted sign that reads ‘THE TOBACCO SHOP’. On the left side of the narrow frontage, there is a 20th-century half-glazed door, and to the right, a late 19th-century plate-glass display window, both covered by a wide canopy box. The first floor is illuminated by a late 20th-century three-light casement window. The rear wing is made of handmade red brick and features three blocked doorways along with modern first-floor windows.
