Description

The stables to Necton Hall are a former stable block, now used as an agricultural building, built in the mid 19th century for William Mason of Necton Hall, likely incorporating an earlier structure. The building features red brick with gault brick and Costessey-ware dressings, and has slate roofs with crested ridges on the wings. It has a T-shaped plan with a central block that is 2½ storeys tall and wings that are 1½ storeys. The symmetrical facade includes a 3-bay centre block that is slightly advanced and topped with an elaborate shaped gable. There are three ground floor openings with semi-circular arched heads, and a moulded string course at first floor level. The first floor has three windows with mullion and transom and glazing bars, and the gable is adorned with stone coping and ball-finials at the springing. A central sun-dial panel is flanked by oculi in the gable. Each side wing has two square-headed door openings and two semi-circular headed cross-windows, along with an upper loading door in a half-dormer with a shaped gable. The building also features a moulded eaves course and crow-stepped gables on the north, south, and west sides. There is a lower pantiled range, possibly earlier, on the west side. Necton Hall itself has since been demolished.
