Description

The Sporle War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, located in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church on The Street in Sporle, Norfolk. It is prominently positioned at the entrance to the churchyard. The memorial features a rough-hewn wheel-head cross with a Sword of Sacrifice in relief, mounted on a plinth with a single-stepped base. This is set on a slightly domed base designed in a “rockery” style.

The base of the cross and the plinth display inscriptions in leaded lettering that read: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF SPORLE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 (NAMES) THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE MAY THEY REST IN PEACE. ALSO OF THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR 1939 – 1945 (NAMES) JESU, MERCY."
