Description

The Attleborough War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with additions for later conflicts. It is situated on a triangular traffic island at the junction of Queen’s Road and Exchange Street, near the Grade II-listed Cyprus House and the Grade II-listed Village Pump.

The memorial is made of Doulton stone and features a cross bottonée above a decorative moulded collar on an octagonal shaft. This shaft rises from an octagonal pedestal that has paired lancet niches on each face, carved with gothic tracery. The pedestal is set on an octagonal plinth with a moulded cap and foot, and later stone plaques are attached to each face. The entire structure stands on a four-stepped, octagonal base.

The plaques on the plinth display inscriptions and names in incised lettering, painted black. The main inscription is located on the east face and reads, "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ATTLEBOROUGH WHO DIED IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY." The names of 101 servicemen who died are listed on the next six plaques, arranged in an anticlockwise direction around the memorial, with each column of names preceded by the dates 1914-1918.

The names of 24 servicemen who died in the Second World War are found on the south and south-east facing plaques, with each column of names preceded by the dates 1939-1945. Additionally, a final dedication to a serviceman killed in a later conflict is inscribed on the south-east plaque, reading 1950-1953 KOREAN WAR (NAME).
