Description

The Griffin Hotel is a hotel that dates from the mid 17th century and 18th century. It is constructed with a timber frame, brick, and render, topped with pantiled roofs in a T plan. The two-storey facade features a cross wing, with a carriage entrance on the right, a door left of centre, and three renewed cross casements on the ground floor. The first floor has applied timbering that is interrupted by three mullioned casements, and all windows are fitted with leaded lights. The gabled roof is bell-based and adorned with decorative bargeboards and a timber eaves cornice.

At the rear, there is a two-storey range with a dormer attic that descends in four sections. It has a brick plinth and a flat brick string course at the first floor. There are various late 19th-century sash windows and two flat-topped dormers from the 20th century. Inside, the restaurant features an early 18th-century brick fireplace and exposed timber framing with straight bracing. The main bar has similar features, although the timbers have been altered. The sitting room above the carriage arch showcases late 17th-century panelling made using mason's mitre construction. The dog leg staircase retains ball-turned balusters and a square moulded handrail, complete with plain square newel posts.
