Description
The south portal of Welwyn Tunnel, located 300 metres north of Welwyn North Station, is a railway tunnel portal built between 1849 and 1850 for the Great Northern Railway. It was engineered by William and Joseph Cubitt and constructed by Thomas Brassey. The portal is made of sandstone ashlar and features a semi-circular arch with a dressed keyed surround, a cornice, and a parapet. It has flanking towers that rise above the center and are capped in a similar style. This portal is part of a significant group with the nearby Welwyn North Station. The railway line was opened by the Great Northern Railway in 1850.
