Description

Northaw House is a house built in 1698, now used as offices. It is constructed of painted plaster on red brick, with a slate mansard roof. The house has two storeys and attics over a sunken basement. The main elevation has seven windows, stepping forward in three shallow projections; the central two projections and the angles have chamfered quoins. A continuous moulded eaves cornice with square modillions runs along the top, and there is a first-floor band. The central three-window section is pedimented with a bullseye window. A semicircular porch, dating from around 1800, features two Doric columns and pilaster responds fluted at the necks. There is a flush panel door within a moulded frame, accessed by six stone steps and plain iron railings, with similar railings fronting a ditch. The recessed first-floor windows are sash windows, while the ground floor has French windows. Box dormers are visible in the roof. Flanking quadrant walls are constructed of red brick.

The entrance hall is floored with stone flags and has groin vaulting, with reeded door surrounds on either side. A 19th-century replica staircase is present, alongside the original service staircase, which has barley twist balusters on the right-hand side.

Plainer, two to three-storey service blocks adjoin the main house to the west, connected to a late 18th/early 19th-century former stable block built of painted brick with a slate roof and central ventilator. The stable block has a 1:4:1 window arrangement, with the outer bays recessed and featuring two-storey relieving arches.

The house is described in Pevsner’s 1977 architectural survey.
