Description

Vernons House is a house with an early 18th-century facade applied to a 17th-century timber-framed core, altered in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The house is constructed of red brick with gauged red brick window lintels, and has a machine tile hipped roof with two tile-hung dormers. It is two storeys and attics, originally a 5-window house, with a modillioned eaves cornice and flush sash windows retaining their glazing bars. A floor band runs around the building. The centre first-floor window has a raised gauged brick surround and a wavy brick lintel. A replacement Queen Anne style doorcase now fronts the entrance. The facade features canted and square ground floor window bays. A two-window extension was added in the 20th century. Inside, there is a central dogleg staircase with plain round balusters. A 17th-century wall painting depicting a tree motif is now located in the dining room, formerly positioned behind the staircase. Exposed beams are visible in the centre of the house.
