Description

This is a polychrome brick Gothic chapel, built in 1871 by Henry Dawson, originally part of the London Orphan Asylum. It features stone dressings and is composed of a four and a half bay nave, transepts, and a chancel with a three-sided apse. The chapel has plain lancet windows and small rose windows in the transept gables. The west front is ornate with clasping buttresses, alternating brick and stone finishing in octagonal stone pinnacles. A brick main gable wall includes a stone niche and finial at the apex, and a large stone plate-traceried rose window set back within a Gothic arch framed with polychrome brick voussoirs and stone side shafts. A hood mould sits above the rose window, with a string at the base of the recess and at the springing level. A slightly projecting gabled porch features stone shoulders, coping, and an apex. The porch contains a polychrome brick arch with side shafts. From the exterior, the chancel is not visible below the windows. Original stained glass remains within the chapel. A vehicle entrance has been broken through the nave wall on the west side.
