Description
Benskin's House, formerly known as The Clarendon Hotel, is a large hotel built in 1860 by J Livock, located on Station Road. It is constructed of yellow brick and stucco in an Italianate style and stands three storeys tall. The building features a hipped slate roof with bracketed eaves and tall, corniced brick chimneys at the corners, as well as a central pair of stacks that are corniced and linked by an arch.
The front facade has a five-window range, while the side has three windows. The first-floor windows are framed with pilastered surrounds and have moulded caps, with egg-and-dart moulded arches above, featuring shell lunettes. The central three windows on the front are linked by stucco arches, creating a five-arch feature. Above these arches is a moulded course from which the panelled sills of the second-floor windows break forward, supported by brackets. The second-floor windows also have stucco surrounds with panels above and console brackets. The ground floor is stuccoed and features pilasters and an entablature.
A central porch with Tuscan columns and outer square piers provides access to the building. The projecting ground floor on the side has large three-light windows flanked by pilasters and a slightly projecting doorcase with three-quarter columns, topped with an entablature. There is a garden side doorway dated 1860. At the rear, there is a stock brick stable with a gabled center and two-window ranges on each side, featuring a red brick arched window head in the center. The right side of the ground floor has pilaster and entablature treatment, with banded brick between the pilasters.
