Description

The Church of St Andrew is a Decorated Gothic style church built between 1853 and 1857 by S S Teulon. Subsequent additions include a south aisle in 1865 and a north aisle in 1871. The church is constructed of flint and stone, with plain tile roofs featuring fish-scale banding. A prominent North East tower rises to 81 feet, displaying paired traceried bell openings, angle pinnacles, and a recessed, octagonal lead cap. The five-bay nave has gabled aisles and a three-bay chancel including an organ loft and vestry. The chancel features two elaborately carved windows on each side, and a five-light East window. Vestries are located at the east end, and a South West porch and transeptal gable project from the south aisle, alongside a South East porch. A narrow lancet window is situated at the east end of the south aisle, above which sits a window of three grouped trefoils within a moulded surround. Diagonal buttresses feature throughout. The church has open timber roofs with arch braces resting on corbels. Octagonal and round piers support the structure, with naturalistic foliage carved into the caps of two Eastern piers and the chancel arch. The north aisle is now blocked off, with a modern ceiling installed. At the east end is a carved stone reredos depicting the ‘Last Supper.’ The East window contains stained glass dating from 1866, and there is good stained glass within the south aisle. The South East window, dating from circa 1865, is richly coloured, while the South West window contains nine Flemish style roundels from the 17th century.
