Description
The Retreat is a house that likely dates from the late 16th century, with some parts rebuilt in the 20th century. It has a timber-framed core with brick nogging and some rendering, and it has been extended in brick. The house features tiled roofs and consists of two bays that remain from what was once a larger structure, with a present rear addition replacing an earlier one. The building is two storeys high, with exposed posts, rails, and studs visible on the drive side. The ground floor has horizontal sliding sash windows, while there is a two-storey addition to the right and a one-storey addition to the left. On the garden side, there are exposed posts and rails, with three ground floor two-light casements, a two-light casement, and a single-light window on the first floor. The rear gable end of the early block has a 17th-century external stack with a rebuilt cap, along with exposed tie beams, struts, collar, and clasped purlins. Inside, there is a stop-chamfered binding beam and curved braces supporting a stop-chamfered cambered tie beam.
