Description

Berkeley House is a house dating from the early to mid 17th century, with an extension added in the early to mid 19th century. The building features a timber frame range at the rear with red brick nogging and a front extension. It has tile and slate roofs. Originally, the house had two bays, with a one-bay rear wing added later. The structure is two storeys high, with the timber frame exposed at the rear and on the right side. It has posts and queen struts supporting a clasped purlin roof. The right side has horizontal sliding sash windows, and there is a canted bay window at the rear. The rear right wing has a gable end with a large truncated external stack that has offsets, a horizontal sliding sash window, and a projection on the right side of the stack, with an entrance on the inner return wall. There is an early stack at the original left end, which was recapped in the 19th century. The front range, which dates from the 19th century, has three bays and is also two storeys high. It features a central entrance with a cambered head, a canted bay window to the left, and a 19th-century shop window to the right with a panelled base and a large projecting hood supported by iron brackets. The first floor has glazing bar sashes, and there is a stack at the right end. Inside, the ground floor has chamfered bearers and wind braces. The building was formerly known as the Berkeley Arms Public House.
