Description

Constables Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, with extensions from the late 18th century and early 20th century. The core of the building is timber-framed, which has been cased and extended in red brick, with some areas featuring tile hanging. It has tiled roofs and originally consists of two bays on the right, with a two-bay addition from the 18th century to the left and a one-bay addition at the front. There is a 20th-century addition to the rear left. The house is two storeys throughout, with the entrance located in a 20th-century gabled porch at the right end of the 18th-century block.

On the ground floor, there are two three-light casements and a single light casement, all with leaded panes and cambered heads. The first floor features two three-light casements with oversailing eaves. The 17th-century block on the right has a lower ridge and includes a one-storey 18th-century gabled projection at the front with an extruded gable end stack. The 20th century has introduced one, two, and four-light casements. On the right side of the 17th-century range, there is a nine-pane sash window and a two-light gabled dormer. The right return has an 18th-century external stack with offsets, an entrance, and a two-light casement in a roughcast attic. The left return also has an 18th-century external stack with offsets and a rebuilt cap.

At the rear left, the early 20th-century wing is taller and features a tile-hung gable at the front. Inside, the ground floor showcases stop-chamfered and chamfered binding beams, exposed studding, a clasped purlin roof, and wind braces. The building was formerly known as the Black Horse Public House.
