Description

Farmhouse. It likely originated in the late 17th century and was extended in the early 18th and 19th centuries. The 20th century saw alterations to the property. The house is constructed of red brick, with some timber frame elements exposed, and has tiled roofs. It comprises two parallel three-bay ranges, the range on the left likely being the earlier of the two. The front has a double gable. The left range is slightly lower and has a steeper roof and contains two windows, while the right range has a single window. A 20th-century gabled timber entrance porch is located just off-centre. Windows are timber casements, some with cambered heads, with two and three panes. Timber panels with brick infill are visible to the left of the entrance and in the left gable, incorporating struts to collar clasping purlins. A ridge stack is positioned towards the front of the left range. The left return is entirely brick-built, with a central entrance and two and three-light casements with cambered heads. A ground floor canted bay has been added to the right of the entrance. The right return features a 20th-century canted bay on the ground floor, and a three-light casement with a cambered head towards the rear. The first floor has three casements. A large ridge stack is located towards the rear of the centre of the right block. The left wing extends further to the rear, with an extruded stack on the rear gable end. A lean-to has been added to the rear of the right block, which contains four-light casements. The interior has not been inspected. Sir Henry Wood formerly lived at Apple Tree Farm.
