Description

The properties at 5, 6, and 7 Chorleywood Bottom consist of three houses built around a core dating to circa 1600, with extensions added later, notably in 1822 as indicated by a datestone on the front wall of No. 7. No. 5 is a timber-framed building with brick infill, further extended using flint and red brick. It originally comprised two bays, with a row of three two-window cottages added to the left. All properties are two storeys high. The right side of No. 5 displays exposed timber framing on the first floor, featuring large timber panels. The windows are largely 20th century casements. The steeply pitched roof is tiled. The cottages to the left each feature a central entrance with a 20th-century porch addition, along with two-light casement windows with leaded glass. The ground floor windows have flat brick arches constructed with gauged brick and flint, incorporating horizontal and vertical brick detailing. The eaves are finished with dentilled brickwork. A datestone is located on the first floor towards the left side. A cross-axial stack is situated between Nos. 5 and 6, with a further stack at the left end. At the rear of the original timber-framed core, an exposed jowled post and a flat-roofed addition are visible. Internally, the ground floor features stop-chamfered binding beams and joists, an original shutter groove, and a small window opening on the rear wall. A stop-chamfered timber lintel is above the fireplace at the right end. Curved braces are visible in the walls, along with mortices for braces to cambered tie beams, queen struts to collars clasping purlins, and curved windbraces.
