Description

Nos. 18 to 20 George Street comprise three adjoining properties dating to the early 16th century, originally timber-framed buildings.

No. 18 is a timber-framed house with two storeys and one window. The first floor overhangs and has a mock-studding finish covered with roughcast. It features an 18th-century sash window with glazing bars set in a flush box frame. A plaque indicates the site was formerly a guest house of the Abbey, later becoming the inn "Le Tabard" in 1545 and the "Antelope" in 1610. The ground floor has an 1800 shop front.

Nos. 19 and 20 form a larger early 16th-century timber-framed building with two storeys and an attic, featuring three windows. The first floor overhangs and is rendered with cement. The roof is steeply pitched and tiled, with one square and one gabled dormer window. It has 18th-century windows which now have later glazing, set in slightly projecting box frames. The ground floor features early 19th-century shop fronts.

Nos. 18 to 28 George Street form a group.
