Description

These are two semi-detached pairs of estate cottages, located in Wheathampstead. They were likely built around 1840, with some alterations made in the 20th century. The cottages are constructed of red brick with gauged brick lintels, and have slate roofs. They are two stories high, with each pair displaying two gable ends facing the road, and single gable ends projecting from each side elevation. Decorative dogtooth brick detailing is found at the eaves. The front gables feature a three-light window on the ground floor and a two-light window on the first floor, originally with cast iron lattice panes. Side gables each have a single window, although many of the windows have been replaced. Single-story, gabled porches are situated in the side angles, featuring elliptical-arched doorways and decorative blind arched panels on the front elevations. Central chimney stacks are grouped together. Tonnadice has a single-story extension added to its south gable end, dating from around 1970. Brogdell Cottage has a roughcast finish to its north gable end.
