Description

107 St Peter's Street is an early 18th-century house that stands three storeys tall and features four windows. It has a high-pitched tiled roof with dormers. The exterior is made of brown brick, accented with red and grey brick dressings, including panels of header courses. The building is supported by wide brick pilasters that hold up a plain entablature and a moulded brick cornice at the second-floor level. Smaller pilasters support a narrower cornice above the second floor. At the top, there is a brick parapet with stone coping that curves down in the center. The brick plinth shows traces of former basement windows. The sash windows, which have glazing bars in near-flush box frames, are topped with gauged, flat brick arches featuring white keystones. The entrance boasts a carved wood doorcase with attached Tuscan columns that support a frieze decorated with alternate triglyphs and trophies, topped with a pediment. There are three steps leading up to a modern door set within deep reveals of fielded panelling. Inside, there is a wide staircase with turned balusters and a cut string, along with a panelled dado on the staircase wall. This house was built by Edward Strong, who was the chief mason under Sir Christopher Wren at St Paul's Cathedral, for his own use. There are two-storey modern extensions on either side of the building. Nos 97 to 107 (odd) form a group.
