Description
The forecourt wall and gateway to the Pemberton Almshouses, located on the west side of St Peter's Street, dates back to 1582. The structure features a tall brick gateway with a pointed head, flanked by small brick plinths on either side, which are empty, while the central plinth has an iron arrow-head pointing upwards. Above the round-arched door opening, there is a stone panel inscribed with the following text: "These 6 Almshouses were erected and endowed with Five Pounds Per Annum Each. Out of the Manor of Shelton in Bedfordshire by Roger Pemberton of St Albans Esquire, who was buried in the Church of St Peter November 20th 1627."
