Description

Sopwell House is an early 18th century manor house that incorporates an earlier building on the site, which is no longer visible. It was altered and extended in the early 19th century. The house now stands three storeys high and features eight windows in an irregular front, with the two left bays representing the original building. The sixth bay, which contains the entrance, is set further forward. The low-pitched slate roof is concealed by a parapet, and the entire front is finished in stucco with decorative bands below the parapet and at the first and second floor levels.

All windows are recessed sashes with glazing bars in plain reveals, mostly segment-headed, except for those on the ground floor to the left of the entrance, which are round-arched. The round-arched entrance has impost blocks and a keystone, supporting a thin cornice hood that is also held up by lions' masks above wide, panelled, modified pilasters. Inside, there is a deeply recessed door leading to a lozenge-shaped hall, with door openings on the four long sides that feature semi-circular tympana above, adorned with allegorical figures in modillions. The ground floor rooms have ornamental cornices, some with modillions or featuring anthenion patterns and guilloche moulding. An early 18th century staircase with turned balusters is also present.

To the right front of the building, there is a one-storey, two-window extension that abuts a large, set-back, stuccoed round arch with an architrave and keystone, framed by an order with paterae in the spandrels, topped with cresting that includes paterae, garlands, and an urn finial. A one-storey, two-window lodge is located to the right of the arch, balancing the extension on the left. Both returns to the arch feature doors in panelled reveals, with pilasters and a wide cornice hood supported by curved brackets. The windows in these extensions are similar to those of the main block.
