Description
The barn located to the south of New Barnes Mill is likely from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations over time. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding set on a brick plinth, topped with a plain tile roof. The structure consists of six bays and has two gabled midstrays on the southeast side, with the right one having its doors replaced by weatherboarding and windows. On the northwest side, there is one opposing cart entry that has been infilled. A large 20th-century sliding door is present on the northeast gable.
Inside, the barn showcases impressive large-scantling framing, with both jowelled and unjowelled wall-posts that are arch-braced to tie-beams supporting queen struts. The roof structure includes clasped purlins, old rafters, and no ridge-piece, along with straight wind-braces. The wall framing features a mid-rail, arched braces, and widely spaced studs.
