Description

Faulkners End Farmhouse is a Grade II* listed hall house, likely built in the late 15th century. Originally, it featured an open hall and a west cross wing. In the late 17th century, the cross wing was largely rebuilt and raised to two storeys with an attic, while the eastern end of the hall was demolished and a stack was added to the eastern end of the remaining bay. The structure has a timber frame with 17th and 18th century red brick infill, and the southern elevation has a red brick facade. The roof is covered with plain tiles.

The farmhouse has two camber-headed windows featuring 20th century glazing bar casements. Both the eastern and western ends have external chimney stacks, with the western stack being larger and topped with tiled offsets on a high base; it has a rebuilt shaft. Inside, the western wall of the 15th century hall displays an impressive set of mid to late 16th century wall paintings across seven panels, likely illustrating a biblical story. These include male and female Elizabethan figures in period attire, with the central panel depicting a landscape featuring a fortress in the background and a partial inscription in Gothic lettering above. A black painted band across the bottom of the paintings was formerly located above a bench, and mortice holes for the bench can be seen in the door post on the left. The hall ceiling was inserted in the late 17th century, and a stack with a wide inglenook was added to the late 16th century smoke bay. The cross wing features a fireplace with curved corners.
