Description

The London coal duty marker, located on the east side of Broad Colney Bridge, was erected between 1861 and 1862 to indicate the limit of coal duty in the London area. This cast iron post is painted white and was originally one and a half metres high, although it is now partly submerged in the ground. It has a square plan with chamfered corners and features roll mouldings from the capital. The front face of the capital displays the arms of the City of London, while raised lettering on the front face of the pier reads '24 VICT'. The marker was cast by Henry Grissell iron works at Regents Canal, London.
